CROSS POST: Touring black belly dance troupe!!

Hey, what do you lovely ladies say to the idea of a professional touring Black Belly Dance group? One that gets together for a season ( a short one more than likely) and tours around the US (for starters). Black Belly dancers from alllll over with various dance styles. I think this would energize and edify us while intriging many. Perhaps most beneficial, it will make black belly dancer way more common place, and allow beginning dance students something to strive to join. It will usher in a new awareness and acceptance of women of color who dance. In this world, when something is different about you, you can either attempt to hide it or flaunt it. I think we all pretty much agree that being a black belly dancer is not too common place (when viewing the belly dance community at large). If we shine a light on this difference, make it bold and beautiful, I believe we can change so many of the negative stereotypes surronding black belly dancers. I dunno, what do you think? We all have our connections and our expertise, if we combine them, what can't we do?

So...tell me what you think, if you're up to it. I know I am. Bring on the greys, I can handle it. The project is definately a go! I just need to know how many people are interested and to what extent.

I'd love to hear more about the documentary!

I'm interested in hearing more about the documentary project - I periodically receive emails from women of color asking whether there is room in the belly dance community for them. Of course, I say yes, and I tell them about some of the lovely dancers I know who can serve as role models for them. But I'd love to be able to steer them to a video that is full of beautiful dancers that "look like them".

What stage are you at in the project now? Still looking for video footage? Which dancers do you have so far?

Md hafla has a performance spot open in September

Hello all- I'm new to the group- I run the All Seasons Hafla, daughter of Baltimore's long-running 5 Seasons Hafla.
Here's our website: www.allseasonshafla.com There is an application page there.
After a recent show where all our dancers were about the same color, a rather pale one like me, I thought I better start posting for dancers some new places! I would like the audience to see all kinds of dancers. This is a hafla of, by and for the bellydance community- first time performers are welcome, and long time performers often dance to 'give back'. I especially like it when teachers send their students who are not quite ready for prime time- performing in front of an audience is how you Get Ready.

So far we have performing in September:
Carey
Trillian
Noura
Atef Hassan and Hany (hey, at least we have guys!)
Nina Amaya, Towson, MD
Banat al-Beled
Latifa

July's show will be awesome- we have a live band!!
Shems, Baltimore, MD
Naimah, Baltimore, MD
Berna of Khafif, Pittsburgh, PA
Rom Deussen, St. George,Utah
Zarifa, Gaithersburg, MD
Basema, Gelsomina and Janaiya
Kaoru and Kimberly, B’more, MD
Nina Amaya, Towson, MD
Belly Dance Delight, B’more, MD

Please consider coming- absolutely delicious Indian food buffet!
LETTER 2 FROM NAKISH

Hello
Hello;
To all my Tribe members and others.;
I want to reach out to everyone who received my first e-mail letter and express my deep apology for the typographical errors.

Available time for me has been limited. It has interfered with my quiet
sit down moments to send off another letter.

I work for a National & International Theatrical local that covers the entire musical spectrum such as Broadway shows, Opera, Ballet, Symphony, Movies, and Industrial Shows, dance companies & all other music events. At times, it keeps me on the move.

I also build for a Designer who designs for smaller theater companies in the San Francisco Bay Area.

An email address has been set up under ladywiththeeyes@yahoo.com
For those who want to contact me. But be aware; don’t expect me to correspond immediately.

I want every dancer to keep a journal each time a club owner discriminates against you for the following reasons:
1) Race
2) Size

Here is a list of things I want everyone to write down:
1)	Club name
2)	Club address
3)	Owner name
4)	Date
5)	Time
6)	The full conversation and any witnesses name, phone number you can get.

News
2008 Intensive workshop in the making;
July 2008

If I get the total response needed, I will give a four day intensive
Work shop and dinner show. There will be surprise teachers plus myself with certificates.
The work shop will be limited. No walk ins. This is the only fair way a certificate can be issued.

I clearly want to express again, that the four days can only happen with total response. If not, a smaller workshop will take place.

Your email response will help a great deal. I’ll need your contact information
So I can update you , or put you on first mail priority, because it will be limited.
Ravenmoon is my right hand, and is working with me. You may also contact her at sacredraven@msn.com.

I took my first bellydance class this Monday with Camila Karam. I really loved the class and it was more then I expected. I wondering if anyone knows of or maybe selling some beginner DVD's on North African bellydance. I would really appreciate any advice.

Networking in Long Beach in February?

Hello All,

My bellydance partner and I are considering checking out the Bellydancer of the Universe Competitions in Long Beach, CA in February 17-18. Because we know there are quite a few bellydancers of color in Southern California, we were wondering if they would be interested in getting together for a causal meet and greet during that time. It would be a low key event for the general purpose of networking. Are there dancers out there in the area that would be interested?

I'm not a bellydancer, not Of Color - just a fan who came here by way of Asmina's Live 365 radio station - Rak On Bellydance!

I love what you dancers are doing. You are beautiful and I enjoy looking at the websites and reading about your art. Very inspiring!

Thank you so much for sharing your artistic passions and your stories. I love jazz, cabaret, Indian and Arabic music.

Is your scene mostly in Washington or in California or are there dancers on the East Coast performing at various events?

Aiwa! Rak On!

Mini version of Documentary

A mini version of what the full planned doc will be has been completed as part of the "Rak On! EXTRA" tv she that R. & I produce. The subject of this mini-doc: Jordan!

The "episode" is currently airing and the intent is to enter the docu-short into some local and national film festivals ASAP. This should provide some buzz and more interest for the full length project.

R. did a great job of editing and his vision/format with this episode of the TV show is what I'd like to see extended for "Aiwa!"

Amar Gamal and Adore (cross posting)

Hi everyone!

Given the recent debates over whether or not dancers of color should continue to support BDSS, something important just occured to me. There aren't any tribes dedicated to the wonderful dancers Amar Gamal or Adore. Being a dark skinned, happily fat bellydancer who's over 25, I'm well aware of the negative attitude that Mr. Copeland has towards women like me, but there are two extremely talented sistahs in BDSS who are still receiving little to no kudos for all of the hard work that they're doing.

On the Tribe, there are numerous groups dedicated to the other dancers in BDSS (i.e. Rachel Brice, Sharon Kihara, Jillina, etc.) and none dedicated to Amar Gamal or Adore. I agree with the sentiment that we as bellydancers of color should be proactive in creating our own space, but let's also start creating a supportive and nurturing space for our sistahs in BDSS who are already out there making strides and working hard.

What do you ladies think?

Hugs,

Eve

He along with Fritz Heede with whom I can find all over the place are my two sources for the Best BELLY Dance music I could or would ever want to hear. That's what I used to use/play all of the time before I once again (after leaving it for a minute) am 'back into the Dance'. This time as many of you know..I have a vested interest beyond the strictly social & entertainment benefits. Namely my newly started Foundation. And to learn more about it (and me) please go to: www.myspace.com/linny_g ..plus if you have ANY information on where I can find music produced by PHIL THORNTON, then 'e' me here or directly at highwaytohome_healthcare@yahoo.com ..thanks!

I might as well tick Tribe.net off by naming just about all of my other Group sources [and did I tell you about Bhuz.com? :-)],
~Linny~

PS. And join me here as a Friend or Associate if the Spirit moves you!

Starvation in Niger

I read a little about his on RB's tribe but with a very busy work week, kids & the expected arrival of my new niece (born Aug. 19th @1036pm), I should have paid more attention to the crisis. A wonderful woman brought this to my attention again so as people of color we NEED to pay attention to things like this happening in Africa. So I'm posting below, the info I found on RB's tribe for my sisters here......(PS: THANK YOU VE!!)

"It was the first time that we had seen locusts like this. It was like a plague. They were like clouds in the sky and they covered the trees and the earth. This is the first time in my life I have seen locusts. We thought it was the end of the world. We didn't know where to go or what to do." - Sayatou (14 years old)

A poor rainy season and a massive locust invasion in the Tillabery region of Niger has triggered a critical hunger crisis in Niger, Africa. Plan is responding, and we need your help.

The Crisis: Millions in Niger are without food. A poor rainy season and locust swarms destroyed crops. An estimated 800,000 children under age five are at risk of starvation. The food shortage is growing worse everyday.

What You Can Do: For the next three months, Plan will distribute bags of rice throughout villages in the Tillabery area, where the situation is critical. Plan will be distributing emergency food supplies to more than 19,000 families - benefiting more than 164,000 people. These efforts will help to keep children and their families from starvation until the annual harvest in October.

Please donate now. $65 will provide 100 kg of rice for each family. This rice will help sustain them until harvest. How many families can you help? $130 for 2 families? $195 for 3 families?

On behalf of Sayatou and the Tillabery families, thank you.

Sincerely,

Blessings all:

My name is Anniitra Ravenmoon, one of the Nubian Divas, and I'm in on whatever we do to bring our people up on this beautiful dance. I have been dancing since the early 1970's and back then,
we were very scarce, especially anyone as dark as I am. We must reacquaint our Sistas about our dance, so the stereotypes can go away. Just as Jessica said, the first thing our Euro-Sistas ask is it only for people of color. Our circle is forever widening.
I am so excited about the up and coming challenges that we have.
I also am going to be online more because I want to bond with each and every one of you. In the 1970's I did'nt have but one friend of color in the classes with me, and she didn't look black, so she was invited to more events than I was. It is good to have this many divas of color to bond with, also to see your young daughters taking an interest in the dance. I got to meet the great
Nakish at a seminat in the 1970's and I wish I can find her now.
Also "Ta Lat War Dat" which was a tribal troup of all black women
also in the 1970's. It was run by Charlot Bocair. I can't find thes divas. But. Charlot was one of the original founders of Mecda.
There is no trace of these women, because I am still looking.
I'll try to get on line more often so I won't miss anything (smile)

Miz Ravenmoon

Things are progressing (slowly but surely). Support continues to grow in amazing ways and I hope to share some of those real soon. :)

Keep the positivity coming and this project will become a much needed reality!

Looking for candidates to be a part of the official "Aiwa!" imagery: to be seen on the website, eventual promo material, etc.

What we are interested in are pictures (clear & high quality) that are cleared & ok'd by both dancer(s) & photographer(s) to be incorporated into the documentary's "image"/branding.

Got what I'm looking for? Let me know as soon as possible! Thanks a bunch :)

I've been belly dancing and teaching since the late '70's. I've travelled to Rakkasah West a couple of times, one of Amaya's Shake and Bake's Acapulco one year, travel and teach dance semniars throughout the mid-west, danced at RenFests for about 16 years, design and make costumes... Let me know how I can be of any help.

Thank goodness this is happening.

I get so very tired of explaining how/why/where that black women do belly dance.

I think the documentary will help open eyes of the public, then maybe just maybe when I get a call for dance I won't have to tell them what color I am but may what style of dance(s) I do.
