I would also like info on musicians & drummers as well for the project so if you are a musician/drummer or know of any that should be included/considered, POST AWAY!

Right on (about your honey!) I think I sent an invite to Vern (I discovered he drummed after looking at his profile).

      Anybody know any oud players?

Must be the other boyfiend. Drumming's my thang.

Sorry don't fit into the color catagory but I'm willing to help out where I can.

By the way can I mention that there is no picture of Kashmir on this Tribe.

            >>Sorry don't fit into the color catagory but I'm willing to help out where I can.<<

Now that's what I'm talking about right there. Did we say you "had" to be "of color" to participate? NO!

What we are trying to do here is just let John Q Public and other black people know that there "are" bellydancers of color out there.
We've been "out there" since the '70's but....wow....where is the representation.

What we are doing is representing ourselves and not leaving it up to others. That's all. Not being exclusive or promoting hate. Just making a place for us too....

"somewhere a place for us...take our hands and we'll take you there......."

Oh and the lack of a picture of Kashmir on this tribe is due to my very busy schedule.

When I go home at night (btw I live an hour each way from my job....& all the pics I have of Kashmir are at home)...I practice dance, work on my class for BOCA, I also volunteered to make the costumes for the Divas for Boca Fest so I do that; maybe get a moment to say "hi" to my hubby and feed the cat and it's 11pm. I also get up at 4:45 so I can go to the gym and be at work by 8am.

So tonight I will put pictures of Kashmir up on every "black" site I belong to. Does Kashmir have a website??? If so I will put her and the muscians up on the Nubian Divas website.

Sorry. Sometimes I forget that written communication sometimes loses something that I make up for with a funny look.

Most of my thread was sillyiness and the main thing I wanted to say is, if I can be of assistance let me know.

As for the picture of Kashmir. She doesn't like pictures to much, so I should have put a wink or something after the statement to show that I was joking.

But if I was coming from a serious mindset or whatever, by just reading the intro. to the tribe it dosen't say anywhere that one had to be of color but it came across that the main cast in this documentory would be of color (like the name says). So when I read this paticular thead it seemed that the search was for Musicians and drummers for the main cast.

Sorry again. Good luck with your search.

              Cheers,
              ~D

Sorry I came on so strong but since we started Nubian Divas a year ago I have gotten that sort of response from a lot of my none "of color" friends {which I do have and cherish}. And honestly it has just been a lack of time for putting Kashmir up on everything we have. She is wonderful.

Not only that when we tried to do the African Market Place Faire in LA the first thing they asked is if we were white. So there is a misconception out there that we are trying to set back on course.

After all the dance was originally called "Beledi" which means dance of the people....that's you and me...but my peeps don't see a lot of the "me" part....yet.

Sooooo thank you Donavon for all of your help and please please come to the Nubian Diva Showcase in June and play and dance and play!

Jessica meet Donavon, Donavon meet Jessica. Now that we've gotten that out of the way... It's all good - I really am not a fan of posting pics of myself all over the place.
Just to let everyone know Donavon is a drummer, he is one of the founding members of the Youm It Talaata ensemble here in Los Angeles, and as far as I know my only boyfriend. I look forward to bringing him out to meet the Divas at the next showcase.
                  love to all - kashmir

                    Welcome! :)

Hmmmmmm.....another idea/topic for the project popping up:

My significant other supported me more than I imagined he would when I started this dance by taking up DRUMMING!! Jess has her honey involved and Kashmir's main squeeze (*smile)

How have the sig-others of us dancers of color been supportive? Have they taken up particiating in some way??

Jumping back up on the soap box here for my husband Rod

Not only has he taken an interest: he learned how to play the drums. Created a drum light to light up my dance. Plays keyboards and wind instruements, makes things for me and doesn't flinch when I purchase a $600 costume. Oh heck yeah I hit the motherload of husbands. I am the luckiest girl on the planet.

did I also tell you he let's me schlep him everywhere for dance?
